Eva Chalas was born in what is now the Czech Republic, but escaped to Italy with her family during the Soviet invasion. Ultimately, she and her family settled in New York. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Herbert H. Lehman College in 1976. She went to medical school at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where she received her Doctorate of Medicine in 1981. She was a resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, graduating in 1985. During her residency, she received numerous awards, including Resident of the Year (twice) and the Humanitarian Resident Award. Following her residency, she served as a Fellow in Gynecologic Oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. During her fellowship, she was selected as an American Cancer Society Fellow. Upon completion of her fellowship, she joined the faculty of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine at Stony Brook University Hospital, where she served as Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology for 7 years. She currently holds the title of Full Professor in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine at Stony Brook and Winthrop University Hospitals. Dr. Chalas is the Chief of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Winthrop-University Hospital and she is also the President and Managing partner of Long Island Gynecologic Oncologists, PC.
Dr. Chalas is Board Certified in Obstetrics/Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology, which is her specialty. She served as an examiner for the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ABOG) from 1995-2004 and serves as a reviewer for a number of medical journals. Dr. Chalas is an active Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist (FACOG) and the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Dr. Chalas has also been very active with regional and national medical societies. She has served on numerous committees for the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). She serves the American College of Surgeons as an ACOG representative to the Board of Governors. Dr. Chalas is also the Treasurer for ACOG District II, and has a number of committee appointments in the SGO.
Throughout her career Dr. Chalas has received numerous teaching and community awards. Most recently, Dr. Chalas was named as a “Distinguished Alumnus” by Stony Brook University School of Medicine in recognition of her outstanding career in Gynecologic Oncology.
Along with her partners she has participated in numerous research studies and is an active contributor to the Gynecologic Oncology Group. She has published more than 50 journal articles and several book chapters.
Dr. Chalas is married to Christian Westermann, MD who is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist. They have three children and enjoy traveling and skiing. |
